Welcome to the Virtual Environment Navigation Laboratory

The VENLab is a research facility designed to investigate human visual control of locomotion and the nature of cognitive maps during navigation. Virtual environments are presented to human participants via head-mounted display while their positions are recorded during movement. The VENLab is located at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Please enjoy your visit to our website.

Mission Statement

To investigate the role of visual information in developing spatial knowledge and in the online control of steering. 

To integrate research from the navigation literature of bees, rats, humans, and robots.

To explore these ideas using a large-scale virtual reality facility.
