You can make an appointment for your child by email - brown[dot]childlanguagelab[at]gmail[dot]com - or over the phone at (401) 863-2410.
We generally make appointments Monday through Friday, anytime from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. We occasionally schedule Saturday appointments, so if that's the only time you can come, please ask!
After you schedule, we will send you directions and a parking pass by mail or e-mail. We will call you the day before the appointment to confirm and make sure you have all the information.
We'll start things off by having your child play with some toys until he or she gets comfortable and is ready to talk.
Before the task, you will be asked to sign a consent form that explains the procedure. You can see an example here.
The exact procedure may vary slightly from study to study, but generally we will show your child a slideshow of pictures and sounds and ask him or her to repeat what was said.
The tasks are designed as "games" for the kids, and you and your child will stay together the entire time!
Before you go, we'll ask you to fill out a vocabularly checklist and answer some questions about the kinds of speech your child hears.
All children who participate take home a t-shirt or a book as a gift at the end of the study.
All of our studies last about 30 minutes, including warm-up time and paperwork.
The Child Language Lab is located in the Metcalf Research Building (190 Thayer St.) on the Brown Campus.
There are signs posted to guide you to the Lab once you are in the building.
