Naomi Feldman

I am a third year graduate student in the Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown University. I'm interested in speech perception and language acquisition, especially the relationship between phonetic category learning, phonological development, and perceptual changes during infancy. I've been using computational models and behavioral experiments to explore questions such as:
  • Why do phonetic categories warp perceptual space around them? [CogSci paper]
  • Do listeners perceive vowels more categorically in the presence of noise?
  • Can babies use phonetic detail to learn more about the sound patterns of a language?
  • Do babies learn a phonetic category faster when they hear that category used more frequently?
  • When a phonological contrast is neutralized, why do phonetic differences persist?
